So if you grew up somewhere along the internet during the early 2010s you might be able to hear this image.
Welcome to the Harlem shake which was a trend that took over the early days of social media influencing and had a massive following going as far as to have compilations of these clips getting as long as 10 minutes (These are big numbers because for the trend the video was only meant to be a few seconds long at the very most from what I remember 30 secs).
The whole premise at least from my understanding was to create a trend in which people can participate and have fun without having to know how to dance, alongside the more randomness focused trends going around during this time also fits into the Harlem Shake.
From what it appears the way to do this trend was:
- Have everyone stand still
- One person would be standing out
- Said person would begin dancing with the song being played in the background
- The beat would then drop
- The entire group of people would then start dancing/doing random stuff as the song played
Ultimately the trend itself died out almost as quickly as it started with some big names at the time joining in even YouTube Rewind did so:
Alongside other trends from the year 2013 we had a few seconds dedicated to the Harlem shake. Which while not being the BIGGEST trend it was certainly one of the more memorable one in the public memory. This could also be seen as one of the first big dance trends however that would be a rather big case to make as there is another dancing trend that appeared which undoubtedly surpasses the Harlem Shake in notoriety and public reception. With that I have been Anthony and till next time!
