Psycho poster with a bloody hand

Psycho, Alfred Hitchcock’s film, director, Movie opened in 1960, and it was one of the first slashers and horror films with a transgender character. The film was considered one of the most influential in cinema history. This film grossed about $32,052,925 worldwide.

It is a very technical thriller. I am talking about this film because it is not just a classic, but it is how people acquire the ability to see slasher movies like Halloween, Scream, and Friday the 13th. The movie refined the horror genre.

The movie was loosely based on the murderer Ed Gein. The film sets a level of violence, deviant behavior, and sexuality in American film. It was a masterpiece known for its dreamy lighting and eerie special effects with pure terror.

The shower scene is one of the most popular; they used casaba melon for the stabbing sounds and heresy chocolate sauce for the blood. The movie explains real-life corporate greed through elements of raw, unhinged violence.

Norman Bates commits several murders and has many features of dissociative identity disorder. Hitchcock implies that there is no escape from society. The film’s story is about a secretary, Marion Crane, who stole $40,000 from her employer and is on the run.

Marion runs away and finds the Bates Motel. She meets Norman Bates, who has a difficult relationship with his mother. Marion commented about the mother being institutionalized. But the mother is not institutionalized but is dead in the bedroom. She is kept well preserved. Marion decides that she is going to return the money the next day.

That night, a shadowy figure stabs her to death with a knife slashing her while she is taking a shower.  Marion gets killed by Norman because he is repressive. Norman is a driven psychopath from his repressive mother.

Norman’s mother represents authority, as she was abusive and controlling during his childhood. Mrs.Bates suffered from schizophrenia. In my opinion, this movie is considered a must-watch if you are starting as a first-time slasher movie watcher.
