Why a good sound track matters.

When playing a game the soundtrack helps determine if you’ll be immersed in the game or not, For example the famous Toothless dancing meme.

It’s originally from the Pokemon Black and White games and their sequels, It has become all and synonymous with the dancing Toothless meme. See the song itself is supposed to pair with the in game city of Driftveil City.

While there is nothing wrong with it inherently being now associated with the meme, as the song itself is a rather upbeat dancing kind of vibe which is really nice especially in the sequel games where Driftveil becomes home to the P.W.T (Pokemon World Tournament), in the original two the song seems almost out of place and here’s why:

See, Driftveil is a port city with a location that is very important to this piece of lore being the Cold Storage:

Now It may seem like I’m going off topic and talking about the design of the city, far from it. When you think of a port city often times you think of a place where the most obvious boats and their captains are, not exactly a place where disco style music would be playing CONSTANTLY while there is an argument for the song to be there because of the market that is shown in the map of the town (the large curved roof structure in the bottom left corner) and while that would make sense as the music would probably used to drown out the loud sounds from the piers. Due to the layout of the map and the fact that the cold storage is a separate playable era it could be said that it would not need the loud dancing music in fact it would be better to assume that if the market has a song playing it would be a small tune that is more calm.

With this in mind it is important to understand how sound helps your immersion in the game. During the Pokemon games it is something pretty common to go through the Tall Grass and when you do if you listen carefully, There is a sound, the sound of stepping through the grass and when you hit a wall there is a sound of hitting the wall. These tiny details may not seem like much in the short term of things but when you are putting together a game that has to deal with the function of exploring outdoors and the like it is important to utilize sound to have that and while I am not saying that the song breaks immersion I am saying that it is a very fun and meme worthy song that may not entirely fit the vibe I had gotten from the town when I first played the games however it has landed itself as one of the many great things of Generation 5 Pokemon.
